These two Samsung smartwatches will no longer get software updates
Samsung has released its September 2026 security bulletin, and the two watches are not included in it
Samsung has officially ended software support for the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. Both watches received their last security update in August 2026, roughly five years after their release.
This move marks the end of an important chapter for Samsung’s smartwatches. The Galaxy Watch 4 series was the first to move from Samsung’s Tizen platform to Google’s Wear OS, a change that shaped the Galaxy Watch models that followed.
These first-generation Wear OS models will still work, but, since they will no longer get security patches, bug fixes, or compatibility updates, owners will need to decide whether to upgrade.
Samsung kept its promise
Samsung promised four generations of software updates for its Wear OS-powered watches, and the Galaxy Watch 4 series has now reached that point.
It received updates to Wear OS 3.5/One UI Watch 4.5, Wear OS 4/One UI 5 Watch, Wear OS 5/One UI 6 Watch, and finally Wear OS 6/One UI 8 Watch.
It’s not surprising that support is ending. Samsung has simply followed through on the update commitment it made when the watches launched.
The Galaxy Watch 4 series was the first Samsung lineup to move from Tizen to Wear OS. Since Samsung ended support for its Tizen watches last September, the Galaxy Watch 4 was the next logical step.
What does it mean for Galaxy Watch 4 owners?
If you already own the Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, your watch will keep working as it does now. However, it will no longer get security updates, bug fixes, or new software features.
Compatibility with newer phones, apps, and services also isn't guaranteed going forward. That doesn’t mean you have to replace your watch right away, but if you use features like payments or cellular connectivity, you might notice some issues in the future.
That leaves the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro as the oldest Samsung watches still getting software support. But if you don’t want to risk being left behind again, the newer Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 are already available.
