The tracker brings flagship-level muscle and fat analysis to a cheaper price point
Withings has expanded its smart scale lineup in the UK and Europe with the official release of the BodyFit—the same body composition tracker that arrived in the US last month.
As with previous scales from the brand, including the Body Smart and Body+, the £229.95 device offers features such as arterial stiffness analysis and cardiovascular risk assessment to help manage their health.
However, the big feature pull here is the segmented body composition tracking—borrowed from the Body Scan. Like that flagship scale, the BodyFit features a retractable handlebar with embedded electrodes for detailed six-zone segmental body composition analysis.
Withings says that this layout allows the device to independently measure fat and muscle mass across the torso, abdomen, arms, and legs, overcoming the limitations of standard scales that only pass an electrical current through the lower body.
Expanding the focus
Given the growing number of people using GLP-1s—for whom monitoring muscle retention during weight loss is increasingly necessary—the expanded rollout of a scale that can deliver this tracking at a more accessible price point makes plenty of sense.
Interestingly, it’s also backed by a clinical validation study conducted in collaboration with the French sports clinic Mon Stade.
Withings claims that its bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy tech has shown a 99% correlation with the gold-standard DEXA scans for tracking body fat percentage, and a 98% correlation for lean muscle mass.
On paper, those accuracy claims are certainly convincing enough. However, I still remain slightly skeptical.
Body composition analysis is notoriously difficult to get right, and given that I’ve had pretty mixed experience with body composition accuracy on Withings’ scales, I’m keen to put this to the test over the coming weeks. Stay tuned for that.
