This week saw the Suunto Ocean launch – a dive computer and GPS sports watch from the Finnish sports giant.
It’s made in Finland using 100% renewable energy, with carbon offset that makes the footprint of the Suunto Ocean equivalent to driving a combustion engine car for 70 km. It’s set to cost £725 (US price TBC) when it launches in Summer 2024.
That’s a pretty competitive price that puts it right up with its main rivals, the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Garmin has a range of dive watches, starting at around $500 for the Descent G1. But the Suunto Ocean is closer to the Garmin Descent MK3, which goes for over $1000 depending on the features you choose.
The Ocean packs a 1.43” AMOLED color display which rivals those found on the likes of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Garmin Epix.
Quick look: Suunto Ocean features
Diving: While there are multiple modes for workouts, the Suunto Ocean is primarily aimed at divers. It supports scuba diving, freediving, and even technical diving. It supports nitrox and uses the Suunto Bühlmann 16 GF algorithm for managing decompression. Dive depth measurement down to 7 bar below surface via barometer sensor.
Underwater Route Tracking: Allows users to view their underwater route in the Suunto app logbook after each dive, including marking entry and exit points. This feature will initially launch as a beta version.
Battery life: Delivers up to 60 hours of diving on a single charge. You can also get 50 hours of continuous outdoor GPS tracking. As a smartwatch only, it will last 26 days before needing a recharge.
Tank Pressure Monitoring: The Suunto Ocean connects with the Suunto Tank POD (£325 – not included with the Ocean) to monitor tank pressure, gas consumption, and remaining gas time directly from the wrist.
Safety Alarms: Provides customizable audio and vibration alarms for enhanced safety during dives.
Sports Features: Aside from diving, the Suunto Ocean supports over 95 default sport modes. It includes GPS for outdoor workouts, a barometer for weather alerts, and offline mapping.
Daily Tracking: Monitors on-wrist heart rate, steps, calories, sleep (including sleep stages), and recovery metrics with heart rate variability analysis.
Integrates with AI-based Suunto Coaches for personalized training insights. It also connects to Strava, Training Peaks, and Komoot.
