Detailed research: Can a TENS unit be used for sciatica?
As we established earlier, some research suggests that TENS might support short-term pain relief for some people, but the evidence on whether it may help with sciatica is extremely limited. That doesn’t necessarily mean TENS can’t be used—there’s just not enough high-quality research to say with confidence if it’s beneficial.
One of the best-known trials of this subject was published in 1999 and included 64 people with sciatica caused by lumbar disc herniation. Participants were randomly assigned to receive TENS, PENS (percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), or sham PENS therapy for three weeks. Although PENS isn’t the main focus of our article, it is worth noting that it is a minimally invasive pain-relief technique that uses thin needle electrodes inserted through the skin.
Researchers suggested that people using TENS experienced reduced pain and used fewer pain-relieving medications than before the trial. However, you should know that the study was relatively small and only followed participants for a short period, so you shouldn’t view its findings as conclusive.
A more recent 2024 randomized controlled trial looked at 164 people with chronic lumbar radiculopathy, a condition that can include sciatica. Participants received TENS, low-level laser therapy (LLLT), and sham LLLT over three weeks. Post-trial results showed that TENS was associated with modest improvements in pain and physical function, though it wasn’t the most effective method.
