The Dexcom G7 is now the first continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system to connect directly to Apple Watch.
It enables users to access real-time glucose readings on their wrist, enhancing convenience and mobility by eliminating the need to constantly carry an iPhone.
The feature is currently available to users in the U.S., U.K., and Ireland, with further international launches anticipated later this month.
“At Dexcom, our users are at the heart of everything we do. Direct to Apple Watch has been one of our most requested features, and we’re thrilled to roll it out to Dexcom G7 users in the U.S. and around the world,” said Jake Leach, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Dexcom.
“We’ve long believed that people with diabetes should be able to view their CGM data where and how they choose. Direct to Apple Watch is a testament to that, allowing people with diabetes flexibility and choice in how they manage their health.”
Dexcom G7 uses Bluetooth to connect with Apple Watch to deliver glucose information and personalized alerts straight to the user’s wrist.
This means users can go for a run or eat out with the peace of mind that they can monitor their glucose levels without their phone.
Additionally, the G7 remains the sole CGM system capable of displaying glucose data on multiple devices simultaneously, including smartphones, smartwatches, receivers, and connected automated insulin delivery systems.
To utilize the Direct to Apple Watch feature, Dexcom G7 users need the latest app version 2.1, an Apple Watch Series 6 or later running watchOS 10 or later, and an iPhone with iOS 17 or later.
It’s a sign that glucose data and consumer wearables are forging an ever-closer connection – as the long-awaited breakthrough of non-invasive blood sugar monitoring gets ever nearer.
