Succeeding the Charge 6, the lightweight aluminum tracker packs a 46% larger screen, upgraded GPS, and modular repairability
Google has officially launched the Fitbit Edge, a $179.99 fitness tracker designed for users who want rich daily health metrics without the size or price tag of a fully-featured smartwatch.
The announcement comes after weeks of leaks—and a premature appearance on Google’s own promo material for the Pixel 11—the device arrives as the direct successor to the Charge 6, introducing a complete redesign alongside Google's expanding Health Coach ecosystem.
Encased in 100% recycled aluminum, the 11.5mm thin housing features a contoured, pebble-like design. Google notes that the OLED display offers 46% more viewing area than previous Charge trackers and pairs it with a redesigned tactile side button for physical workout controls.
Interestingly, Google also suggests the Edge has been engineered as its first repairable fitness tracker, incorporating a modular internal architecture and a replaceable battery to extend hardware longevity.
Bridging the gap between the Pixel Watch 5 and screenless trackers
The release fills a distinct middle ground in Google's wearable lineup. Positioned between the screenless Fitbit Air—best for minimalist, passive tracking—and the flagship Pixel Watch 5, the Fitbit Edge targets active users who want glanceable, real-time metrics.
Under the hood, an upgraded GPS chipset and nano-molded aluminum housing deliver a claimed 40% improvement in route-mapping accuracy over the Charge 6, supported by an integrated altimeter that measures elevation changes during hill runs and stair sessions.
The exercise app also supports 50+ manual workout modes and automatically recognizes up to 100 activities.
For health monitoring, the Edge packs an on-wrist ECG app, continuous optical heart rate tracking, a dedicated skin temperature sensor, and background Health Guardian algorithms designed to flag trends in blood pressure and insulin resistance.
Despite its expanded screen real estate, Google claims the Edge delivers up to seven days of battery life, and magnetic charging provides a full day of tracking in five minutes.
Pre-orders are open now at $179.99/£159.99 (or $219.99/!89.99 Stephen Curry Special Edition), with retail availability set for October 27.
