If you're a fan of a certain aesthetic - playful, cute, ultra-feminine - then you'll be aware of Kate Spade's line of hybrid smartwatches. Now the collection is expanding to touchscreens with the Android Wear-running Kate Spade New York Scallop smartwatch.

Debuting at CES 2018 amongst a whole Spring 2018 Fossil Group line-up including fellow Android Wearer the minimalist Skagen Falster, the new Kate Spade watch features a fully round 1.19-inch AMOLED display with a very respectable 390 x 390 resolution. Style-wise, as the name suggests, there's the Kate Spade scallop design around the bezel and some extra detail on the watch crown.

The verdict: Kate Spade New York Scallop review

At 42mm, this is rather large for a women's watch and we don't have the details of the exact thickness but we expect this will sit up on the wrist. The case is made from stainless steel with a 16mm lug width. The three styles available at launch are: gold-tone finish with black leather strap; rose gold-tone with a vachetta leather strap and rose gold-tone with a rose gold-tone steel bracelet.

So what can it do? The Kate Spade watch connects to both iPhone and Android phones via Bluetooth 4.1 and does everything an Android Wear watch does: notifications, third party apps, fitness tracking, music with 4GB of storage, Google Assistant voice controls.

Fossil Group's designer smartwatches tend to add a little something unique from the brand and here the fashion twist is the 'Choose Your Look' app. More than the customisation we saw on the Michael Kors Access Sofie, the app gives you a survey about what you're wearing - the colour of your outfit and handbag, time of day and tone of jewellery - and then suggests a watch face to match.

That's a really nice idea that we're sure will appeal to Kate Spade fans as will the bespoke watch faces with winking eyes, falling daisy petals and NYC taxi animations.

The Scallop also matches the current crop of tech-y watches on specs: running Android Wear 2.0, on a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, waterproofing to 1 ATM and with a 24 hour battery life, helped out by an ambient light sensor for the display.

The Kate Spade New York Scallop smartwatch collection will go on sale online and in stores next month in February 2018 but it goes up for pre-order straightaway from 9 January.
