Patent filing tips AI-driven update to assess fall risk before it happens

Ultrahuman may bring fall detection—and, more significantly, fall risk assessment—to current or future smart ring models, as detailed in a recently uncovered patent.

Over the last decade, fall detection has become a potentially life-saving feature on smartwatches like the Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch, and others.

The feature usually works by analyzing movement speed, angle, and impact from a hard fall. When algorithms detect that motion signature, an automated alert is dispatched to emergency services or designated emergency contacts.

Assessing risk before impact

Ultrahuman’s new proposal takes a preventive approach by attempting to detect both when a fall has occurred and when one is likely to happen.

In a 2026 patent filing observed by Wareable, the company reasons that current implementations of fall detection don’t account for the “subtle early warning signs of a fall, such as unsteady walking or changes in gait.”

It says falls are often “preceded by gradual changes in the user’s walking patterns or balance,” which are “often missed due to a lack of advanced analysis or proper sensor integration.”

The filing describes using machine learning trained on wearer walking data to analyze six-axis motion data (acceleration and angular velocity across the X, Y, and Z axes), step count, and hand movement consistency to calculate fall probability.

A resulting “confidence score” for fall risk could allow family members or caregivers to intervene and prevent life-changing fractures, head injuries, and mobility loss before a fall occurs.

The patent adds: “Early signs of instability, such as altered gait, slower walking speed, reduced step length, or unbalanced movements, often go undetected until a fall actually occurs. Without the ability to anticipate these issues, users are left without preventive interventions that could mitigate the risk of falling.”

Reducing false positives

The AI’s learning in detecting fall risk would also lead to higher confidence in confirming falls. Ultrahuman believes this will reduce false positives from actions like bending or kneeling.

When the confidence score exceeds a set threshold, the wearable will send a distress signal—such as a call to emergency services or a relative or caregiver—via a connected device like a smartphone.

While Ultrahuman uses the smart ring as an example, it also says the invention could apply to smartwatches, fitness trackers, and any wearable with motion sensors. This would mitigate the drawbacks of some dedicated fall detection devices—such as pendants—which can be cumbersome to wear.

“In the event of a fall, timely fall confirmation and distress signal transmission ensure that immediate action can be taken, improving the user's safety and response time,” the patent adds.

“Moreover, the system is designed for seamless integration into wearable devices, offering an easy-to-use, comfortable solution that does not interfere with the user's daily activities or mobility. The use of machine learning models further enhances the system's accuracy over time, particularly in confirming falls, which significantly increases the overall reliability and effectiveness of the fall detection system.”

Could we see the feature arrive soon?

Given the likes of Oura and Samsung are yet to adopt fall detection for its smart rings, the feature could give Ultrahuman a significant leg up over the competition.

Plus, because current Ultrahuman models already include the necessary six-axis sensors outlined in the patent, fall-risk and detection capabilities could theoretically be added via a future software update.

As ever with these filings, it's difficult to know what the future holds; one is never a definite indication that it will ever come to market. However, like with the brand's potential work on a smart ring controller for AR glasses, it highlights a sensible and natural direction for Ultrahuman to consider as it expands its product portfolio.
