When is Amazon Prime Day 2019?

Amazon Prime Day 2019: Best smartwatch, fitness tracker and VR headset deals

Amazon has just announced that Prime Day 2019 will fall on Monday 15 July through Tuesday 16 July. That means there will be two full days of deals, up to 48 hours from 36 hours, the longest Prime 'Day' yet.

This year, Prime Day will take place in the US, UK, Spain, Singapore, Netherlands, Mexico, Luxembourg, Japan, Italy, India, Germany, France, China, Canada, Belgium, Austria, Australia and, for the first time, the United Arab Emirates is getting in on the action.

What is Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is a massive sales event, unsurprisingly from Amazon. The retailer slashes the prices of a range of products including everything from electronics to beauty and home.

Of course, we're focusing on the wearables front, providing our expertise to help you pick the best fitness tracker, smartwatch and other wearable deals. But you can expect discounts on practically every product category available from the massive retailer.

Prime Day will be a mix of Amazon's deal of the day promotions as well as its famous 'Lightning' deals. These deals are time- and stock-limited, meaning you only have a short window to snap up a bargain.

Amazon Prime Day is designed to also help promote Amazon's Prime subscription service, which brings us handily to our next point...

Do you need to be an Amazon Prime member for Prime Day deals?

The short answer is yes.

The Amazon Prime Day discounts are exclusive to Amazon's own Prime subscribers. This is as both an added perk for existing subscribers and a good reason for new subscribers to join Prime. Fortunately, you can always sign up for a tactically-timed Prime trial to get access to the very best Prime Day deals.

Amazon fully expects people to go for this try before you buy method and then get hooked on all of Prime's benefits and carry on a yearly membership at . There are also monthly payment options if you don't want to pay for your membership in one go.

If you take out a trial and definitely don't want to continue beyond the free 30 days, you can easily opt out of auto-renewal and not be charged once the trial ends.

Will Prime memberships be discounted?

Funny you should mention that. Amazon in the UK has just dropped the price of a year's Prime membership to £59 instead of £79 if you pay for the year all at once. Otherwise the standard £7.99 price still applies.

If you want a full year, it makes financial sense to go for the year plan for Prime's multitude of benefits. These go far beyond just expedited delivery, including access to Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Music, Amazon Prime Reading and a whole host more.

There hasn't been any mention of discounted Prime in the US just yet. But we'll keep you updated if any deals arrive.

What deals should I expect from Prime Day 2019?

Amazon Prime Day 2019: Best smartwatch, fitness tracker and VR headset deals

Amazon will keep its deals under wraps until the big day arrives. But the easiest way to get an idea of what will go on sale is to look at previous years. Luckily, we were here covering Prime Day 2018 so have a good idea of what to expect.

Last year, we saw Prime Day Fitbit deals on the Fitbit Charge 2, which went on sale for . That's since been replaced by the Fitbit Charge 3, which has already dropped as low as . We fully expect the Fitbit Charge 3 to beat these low prices. Other deals will likely appear on the Fitbit Versa and Versa Lite.

Amazon Prime Day 2019 could also be a great time to bag yourself a bargain Apple Watch Prime Day deal. The Apple Watch Series 4 hadn't been released as of last year's Prime Day, so it should feature heavily in this year's discounts.

For context, we saw $50 off the Apple Watch Series 3 last year, bringing it down to $279. We wouldn't be surprised to see the newer Apple Watch Series 4 hitting that price this year.

Last year the Apple Watch Series 1 38mm dropped to $194, a saving of $105. The superior Apple Watch Series 3 38mm is currently already $199, so this could hit a ridiculously low price for Prime Day 2019.

For Garmin Prime Day, we saw discounts on everything from the Fenix 5 to Forerunner 235 and Vivosport. We recently saw the Fenix 5 on sale for $399, so it could plummet further for Prime Day. The Forerunner 235 has since been replaced by the newer Forerunner 945 just in time for Prime Day, so this could be the first time this new running watch gets a discount.

Away from the world of wearables, Amazon has already announced a raft of smart home discounts. Unsurprisingly, these include big discounts on its own devices including Amazon Echo. Our sister site The Ambient will be covering all of the best Prime Day smart home deals, where you can expect deals including:

For Amazon Echo:

  • Save $50 on Echo, just $49.99
  • Save $70 on Echo Show, just $159.99
  • Save $25 on Echo Dot Kids Edition, just $44.99
  • Get an Amazon Smart Plug and Echo for just $54.98

For Amazon Fire TV:

  • Save $25 on Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote, just $14.99
  • Save $25 on Fire TV Stick 4K with Alexa Voice Remote, just $24.99
  • Save $50 on Fire TV Cube, just $69.99

How do you know if you're getting a genuinely good deal?

The best way - and the way that we use to check any deal we share - is to look at the price history of a product. A great way to do this is using the Chrome extension Keepa.

This smart little extension automatically embeds a price history graph straight into an Amazon product page, so you don't even need to go anywhere else to check old prices.

This way you can see if you're getting a genuinely good deal. That's obvious if it's being sold for its lowest-ever price, but it can still be a good deal if a product hasn't been discounted for a long time.

If you need a product there and then, any discount can be a good one, too. Otherwise you can play a waiting game that can last a long time.

If you don't fancy doing any of the leg work, we'll only be sharing the absolute bonafide best Prime Day deals.

Will there be deals at other retailers?

Almost certainly. Amazon's biggest rivals can't let it have a day of discounts all to itself. In the US, you can fully expect competing deals from the likes of Best Buy and Target, and in the UK Currys and John Lewis have had its own deals.

Other retailers will likely price match discounts from Amazon or look to undercut them, which is good news for us shoppers. If there are any notable discounts elsewhere, we'll include them right here.
