The Google Pixel Watch 3 represents the latest pinnacle of the company’s Wear OS platform, but it may not be supported with security updates and new features for as long as you might suspect.
According to an uncovered Google support page for the Pixel Watch 3, the all-new smartwatch will only receive software updates for around three years from its release date.
This means users can enjoy security patches and potentially new feature releases until October 2027, with Google sticking with the same support period made available through its previous Pixel smartwatches.
The OG Pixel Watch, for example, is only slated to receive updates until next October.
Yet, compared to the company’s Pixel smartphones, or even the four years offered for Samsung’s Galaxy Watch series, the support period is still relatively minimal.
The latest Pixel 9 series is on track to receive Android updates for seven years, meaning you would have to upgrade your smartwatch twice to maintain optimal performance and security during that time.
If we look across to Apple, its latest software update—watchOS 11—will still be accessible on the Series 6 (released in 2020) for the coming year, before support will probably end ahead of watchOS 12. That’s five years total, and it sees it edge out both Samsung and Google.
Here’s hoping it’s an area Google can match its rival in over the coming generation or two.
