Microsoft is looking for accredited universities to come up with research proposals around HoloLens, its futuristic AR headset.

Let's face it, the really incredible application ideas for new tech always come from third-party sources, and that's the thinking behind Microsoft's Academic Research Request for Proposals.

Microsoft is offering five $100,000 prizes as well as two development kits each for the best submissions. The awarded money and dev kits are expected to be used to carry out the winning proposals.

The projects should focus, but not be restricted to, research into augmented reality's role in data visualisation, teaching STEM/medicine/design, communication, interactive art and media and human-computer interaction. So gimmicky Iron Man-style games are out then.

Microsoft is looking for full, finished reports with the knowledge that if it picks a particular proposal, the team behind it will have the resources, ability and funds to see it through. The application is only open for institutes in the US and the deadline for applications is 5 September. The winners of the awards will be announced on 6 October.

If you think your university or research team has what it takes, follow this link for more information on applying.
