Garmin Cirqa vs Whoop: Which recovery and fitness tracker should you buy?

We tested Garmin Cirqa vs Whoop—a similar look but completely different approaches

If you’re looking for a wearable device to track your sleep, recovery, workouts, and overall general health, both Garmin Cirqa and Whoop might be what you’re looking for. While both are well-known and constantly praised names, it’s important to note that they take quite different approaches.

Garmin Cirqa is a straightforward gadget that collects and displays advanced health and fitness metrics via the free Garmin app. Whoop, on the other hand, requires a monthly subscription but provides more guidance than raw data about your well-being.

To find out which one is worth your money, we decided to test both in real life rather than just checking their specifications. During this time, we looked into their design, comfort, features, usability, and, of course, price, which you’ll find in this review.

Garmin Cirqa vs Whoop: Key differences

Choosing the best tracker is never easy, since devices like Garmin Cirqa and Whoop are both definitely top-performers. During our tests, we found that both are excellent for fitness and well-being monitoring, but the final decision depends on your preferences. Before going into detail, there are a few key differences that you should consider.

Garmin Cirqa definitely builds on its well-established sports ecosystem. It’s a low-maintenance wearable with a physical button that allows you to start and end workouts even more conveniently. Whoop could be considered a sort of digital coach. It mostly focuses on gathering your data and providing you with guidance for a faster recovery.

Subscription-free ownership vs recurring membership

The main difference between these two gadgets is the payment model. Garmin Cirqa is a one-payment purchase. Once you purchase it, you get access to the band and a companion app, which you can use without any other payments. Whereas Whoop uses a recurring membership model. While the device itself is usually free, you need to get a membership to unlock its features and track your metrics. Keep in mind that you’ll need to renew the membership every year if you want to continue using it.

Design, comfort, and everyday wear

Since you’ll wear your tracker for most of your day or even 24/7, it’s important to choose one that is comfortable for you. During our tests, once we got used to wearing them, both Whoop and Garmin Cirqa proved to be quite unnoticeable.

In terms of size, both devices are quite similar at first glance. Even though they look alike, Whoop is a bit heavier. Both devices are around 24 milimteres width. However, Garmin Cirqa weighs only about 17 grams, while Whoop weighs about 26 grams. Nonetheless, you shouldn’t really notice either when working, relaxing, or doing things around the house.

Besides, both trackers are very minimalist and made of high-quality materials. Garmin Cirqa comes with a classic nylon band, which is very convenient even when showering or working out. With Whoop, you can choose between several band materials, including silicone, microfiber yarn, and even leather. While both devices are quite similar in design, they come in different colors. You can get Garmin Cirqa in black, gray, blue, and mauve. The colors for Whoop depend on the band that you choose, but you can find neutral colors like black, white, and grey, or choose something more playful, such as pink or blue.

Comfort during workouts

Overall, both trackers proved quite comfortable during workouts, staying in place while running or during heavy lifting sessions. On the other hand, if you sweat a lot during your workouts, it’s important to consider the band's material.

Garmin Cirqa’s nylon band doesn’t absorb sweat, and you can easily wipe it off with a towel. Besides, it has a side button, meaning that you don’t need to use the app to end your workouts. On the other hand, Whoop’s microfiber yarn is quite flexible, but it definitely soaks up sweat, leaving your wrist damp.

Health tracking and recovery features

During our tests, we spent a great deal of time analyzing and trying out both devices’ health and recovery-related features. While both offer all necessary health tracking features and some advanced benefits, you won’t get overwhelmed by them.

Garmin Cirqa focuses on data, leveraging its established fitness- and health-focused ecosystem. Wearing it, you’ll be able to monitor your heart rate, stress levels, skin temperature, and SpO2. Besides, the wearable pays close attention to your sleep tracking and recovery.

Using the Garmin app, you’ll get a daily Sleep Score that indicates the quality of your rest. It can even analyze how well your sleep aligns with your body’s natural circadian rhythm. If you’re interested in recovery, Garmin Cirqa has Body Battery and Training Readiness scores. By checking this data, you’ll better understand your body and adjust your routine accordingly.

We found that Whoop offers quite similar features, but the approach is different. It also focuses on sleep, strain, and recovery. It tracks your daily HRV, resting heart rate, sleep quality, and skin temperature. It also combines this data and gives you a score, which should help you to understand how rested you actually are that day. However, rather than providing raw data, it acts like a coach. If your score is lower, it might suggest skipping some more intense workouts to help your recovery.

Exclusive features and unique health metrics

Apart from common health and recovery features, Garmin Cirqa offers VO2 max estimates for fitness and excellent women’s health tracking. This includes features for pregnancy and menstrual cycle monitoring.

Whoop also focuses on women’s health and longevity, but what sets it apart is its specialized coaching, which helps you build better, long-term habits and improve your well-being. While both devices gather the most common metrics and have their own benefits, we believe that Whoop’s coaching-focused approach might be a good fit for many of us, especially if you’re not always sure how to adjust your workouts and rest time.

Fitness tracking and training experience

Garmin definitely brings its sports watch ecosystem into the Cirqa model. By simply clicking the side button on the tracker, you can instantly start tracking your workouts. Garmin Cirqa can recognize over 80 different activities, so no matter what workouts you prefer, you’ll be able to record them.

Besides, using the Garmin Connect app, you’ll see insights about your performance, including heart rate and metrics on how specific sessions improved your fitness. There is even connected GPS mapping on your phone if you like to train outside. After testing Garmin Cirqa for quite some time, we believe it’s definitely performance-driven, as it monitors what you do and provides insights into how you can improve your workouts.

Once we tested Whoop for our workouts, it seems that it focuses more on recovery. Instead of monitoring only your gym session, it also measures the cumulative cardiovascular and musculoskeletal strain your body takes on all day long. You also get a Strain Score, which indicates how hard your workouts were. If you’re lifting weights, you’ll also find the Strength Trainer feature very useful, as it measures not only your heart rate but the muscular load of your sessions as well.

Instead of only giving you pace charts and similar data, Whoop uses your fitness metrics to give you recovery suggestions. It will indicate exactly how much sleep and rest you need before your next workout.

Which is better for athletes?

If you’re struggling to understand how much rest you need or you mostly train with weights, Whoop might be more useful for you. However, for runners, cyclists, or any other athletes who want to analyze their data, such as pace, heart rate, and overall progress, Garmin’s sports ecosystem is the best choice.

Mobile app and user experience

Since both Garmin Cirqa and Whoop don’t have any screens, you’ll need to use their companion apps to monitor your data.

The biggest advantage of Garmin Connect is that all necessary data is easily accessible without any additional subscriptions. Using it, you’ll see a wide range of metrics, including heart rate graphs, Sleep Score, Body Battery, menstrual cycle data, stress, and hydration levels. When exercising, you’ll also get a detailed overview of your workout, which will show you your heart rate, pace, stats, laps, and a chart.

If you’re looking for a data-driven app, you’ll love Garmin Connect. However, compared to Whoop, we found it to be less modern. While we didn’t necessarily have issues finding what we needed, it might be a bit overwhelming for beginners.

On the other hand, we were impressed with Whoop’s app, more specifically, its interface. The app looks modern, and all data is presented in a clear way. Whoop categorizes all your metrics into three color-coded tabs (Sleep, Strain, and Recovery), making it even easier to navigate.

Just like with Garmin Connect, in the Whoop app, you’ll find data such as your heart rate, steps, sleep performance, and respiratory rate. The menstrual cycle insights tab also looked sleek, displaying all data on a calendar to make it easy to track your cycle. However, keep in mind that even with the paid subscription, not all features will be available, so you might need to upgrade your membership for more advanced data.

Battery life and charging

When it comes to battery life and charging, Garmin Cirqa and Whoop are quite different. With both devices, you won’t have to worry about charging for over a week, and the overall choice really depends on your preferences.

During our tests, Garmin Cirqa lasted 10 days without charging. Once it runs out of battery, you’ll need to charge it with a plug-in cable. A full charge lasts around 90 minutes for us.

Whoop, on the other hand, can last 14+ days without charging, but we had to charge it at the end of our 9th day of testing, since we used it quite heavily, enabling daily workouts and features. One thing that sets Whoop apart is that you don’t need to take it off to charge. It comes with a wireless battery pack that you put over the sensor. Nonetheless, we believe that removing Garmin Cirqa for an hour and a half every 10 days is not much of a problem.

Pricing, subscription, and overall value

Price is one of the key factors for most of us when choosing any device. However, when it comes to fitness trackers, the upfront price is not the only thing you should consider.

Garmin Cirqa is a pay-and-go kind of gadget. While it’s not the cheapest tracker out there, you pay for the device and you can use it without any additional charges. It has a companion app, Garmin Connect, where you’ll be able to see all your health metrics. The best part is that the app is completely free, unless you want premium features, such as nutrition tracking or AI insights. To get these features, you’ll need a premium subscription, which is surprisingly not that expensive.

Whoop, on the other hand, has a completely different approach. It markets the gadget as completely free and only requires a subscription to use it. The catch is that without the paid subscription, you don’t have any use of the device, and the price for the membership is actually quite high. Besides, you need to renew the subscription every year, meaning that you’ll spend way more in the long run than purchasing a tracker outright.

Final verdict

After trying out these top fitness trackers, we believe that Garmin Cirqa wins over Whoop due to its unbeatable long-term value and a subscription-free payment model. Garmin Cirqa not only provides detailed data about your wellbeing, but also comes from a well-established fitness tracking ecosystem. Due to this, it’s a perfect choice for simple users who want to monitor their health insights and professional athletes who want to get the most out of their workouts.

Even though we found Garmin Cirqa to be the better option for most people, it doesn’t mean that Whoop is any less good. It’s a perfect choice for those looking for more guidance and focus on recovery. However, due to the recurring subscription payment model, it’s less practical financially.
