Meta has undergone a huge restructure, and created a new wearables division for the development of its smart glasses.
The announcement, reported by The Verge, sees the creation of distinct metaverse and wearables divisions.
Meta Quest and Horizon will be handled by the metaverse division, while the new Wearables one will handle the company’s AR glasses development.
There have been a number of lay-offs in the restructure.
But the announcement gives its AR wearables the best chance of success.
Meta’s metaverse vision is still polarising, and its virtual world (with legs) is a long way from becoming…something.
Meanwhile, on the wearables side of the fence, Andrew Bosworth, Meta CEO, described the reaction to its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses as “a much bigger success than expected”.
It’s rolled out AI capabilities to the existing Meta smart glasses, and is reportedly working on glasses with full AR capabilities.
Keeping development of this project away from the chaos of the metaverse project makes sense, and it’s an area where Meta has developed an unlikely lead.
