Snap Spectacles only went on sale properly, i.e not in pop-up vending machines, at the end of February. But Snap still managed to sell around 60,000 pairs of its $130 camera smartglasses in the first quarter of this year.
That's an estimation as the only data Snap has actually released is that it made $8 million in revenue in its 'Other' category. That's double the $4 million from around 30,000 sales at the end of 2016, which makes up the 90,000 sales so far.
So what does that mean? Well it's a miniscule number if you compare it to Snapchat's 301 million monthly users. And even to the c. 3million Apple Watches and Fitbit trackers that are sold in three months. It's actually closer to very early VR headset sales numbers. The latest CCS Insight report predicts 2 million sales of smart eyewear (excluding VR) by 2021 and 21 million wearable cameras.
But considering there's not much to compare it to in terms of being an accessible, affordable, fashionable pair of connected sunglasses, the numbers are pretty promising. It shows that demand rose after the initial hype before Christmas plus Snap has said that 5 million Snaps have been sent via the glasses so far. So people are actually using them too. It's not a spectacular start for Spectacles so far (sorry) but it's a start.
The real test will be numbers for the rest of 2017 - everyone remembers that graph showing the dip after early adopters bought the first Apple Watch. Evan Spiegel didn't have much to say about AR, which we expect to show up in future Snap glasses after the acquisition of the Israeli startup Cimagine and the debut of its World Lenses feature in April. "It's been really exciting to see people capture memories from their perspective," he said of the Snap numbers. "We're going to keep experimenting there."
