Xiaomi is preparing to bolster its smartwatch ranks as details emerge of its next watch, purported to be known as the Mi Watch Lite.

After launching the Mi Watch and the Mi Watch Color at the beginning of the year, and more recently the Xiaomi Mi Watch Color Sports Edition, the Watch Lite looks set to be an even more affordable addition to that first member of the Mi family.

Details of the new Xiaomi smartwatch were discovered in an FCC certification listing in the US, which not only gave us a first look at the design, but also offered some of the specs it'll come packing.

The image (below), shows that it'll be a square option like the first Mi Watch with a silicone band and one physical button tucked up in the top right hand corner of the case.

It also appears to be showing off a watch face that looks a lot like one of the Nike ones you'd find on a Nike edition Apple Watch.

In terms of features we can expect, the Mi Watch Lite is said to have a 1.4-inch HD touchscreen display, built-in GPS, a heart rate monitor for continuous monitoring and multiple sports modes.

It's reported to be wrapped up in a design that's water resistant up to 50 metres and also offers swim tracking too.

It's also stated that it will work with both Android phones and iPhones, and will come packing a 230mAh capacity battery.

The model details mention the name Redmi, the sub-brand of Xiaomi, which may suggest it will launch under the Redmi brand in some territories.

So how does those specs compare to the first Xiaomi Watch?

The original had a larger 1.78-inch screen and 570mAh capacity battery. It also featured onboard GPS and a heart rate monitor. There's no details on whether the Mi Watch Lite will run on the same Wear OS/MIUI mash-up, though we'd imagine there's a strong chance it will.

As far as when we'll see the Mi Watch Lite, the timing of its appearance at the FCC may point to its imminent arrival. We'll be sure to give you the full lowdown when Xiaomi decides to make it official.
