Huawei's Diabetes Risk Study comes to Watch GT 7—as CEO confirms standalone blood sugar device

The smartwatch feature uses PPG sensors to estimate risk—while four years of R&D point toward new hardware

Huawei is expanding its health research footprint by rolling out its Diabetes Risk Study to Watch GT 7 and 7 Pro owners via an over-the-air update.

Now rolling out to users of the smartwatch series in the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Europe, the screening feature harnesses the watch's standard PPG optical sensor to analyze physiological patterns over a mandatory 3- to 14-day wear period.

By combining continuous pulse-wave data with demographic metrics such as age, sex, height, and weight, the system produces a diabetes risk assessment inside the Huawei Research app.

Huawei emphasizes that the feature does not measure actual blood glucose values, nor can it be used to adjust medical treatments.

Instead, it serves as an early-warning screening tool to identify underlying vascular indicators that warrant formal medical follow-up.

Four years of R&D targeting non-invasive glucose testing

Interestingly, the software study rollout comes just a week after a major hardware disclosure by Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO He Gang (for clarity, the BG is one of the company's three cores, sitting alongside the brand's carrier network business and enterprise arm), who confirmed the company is developing a dedicated blood sugar testing device for release in the near future.

Speaking at a keynote at Peking University, He Gang said Huawei's non-invasive blood sugar monitoring technology has undergone four years of continuous research and development to reach a commercially viable stage.

While Huawei has not disclosed whether the final hardware will be a smartwatch, specialized wearable, or standalone medical accessory, the project underscores the brand's clear intent to move beyond predictive PPG algorithms to direct blood glucose monitoring.
