The Diesel On touchscreen smartwatch has been unveiled at Baselworld, and could be the most exciting device in Fossil Group's snowballing Android Wear 2.0 range.

Let's start with what we know about the touchscreen model. Fossil has indicated the watch will run Android Wear 2.0 and feature Snapdragon Wear 2100 under the hood, with the AMOLED screen described simply as 'high-resolution'.

We've taken a look at the Diesel On from behind glass – sadly we weren't permitted to take any photos – but looks exactly as you'd expect a Diesel watch: chunky, industrial with big lugs and a solid build.

It also features a fully circular screen, with no flat spot at the bottom for the light sensor, commonly referred to in these parts as the "flat tyre".

However, in terms of exciting innovations, it's actually what the Diesel On adds to Android Wear that got us excited.

Diesel On: Filters and micro app

The first element are 'filters': essentially watch face overlays that add (gimmicky) functionality to your Android Wear experience. One takes over when the watch is placed in 'do not disturb' mode, and virtually cracks the screen when you get a message. The more you get, the more cracked the screen.

The second is unofficially known as "fogged up", and virtually steams up the screen the longer you're inactive. Sit on your butt long enough, you can't see your screen.

Sure, those elements are pretty gimmicky, but it shows that Fossil is starting to get creative with Android Wear, and have the confidence to bring its brand personality out in its different variations.

Diesel was more cagey around revealing the micro app features, but revealed that it would focus on personalised messaging.

The hybrids, which include the devices shown above, will be released in multiple colours and be based on the 'dumb' Mega Chief watch. And following usual Diesel convention, these watches also appear to lean more heavily towards the more masculine end of the spectrum.

Just how many different colour variants Diesel will drop in its 'On' collection is currently unknown, and pricing details remain scarce for all of the above.

As you might expect, these all form part of Fossil Group's behemoth unveiling at Baselworld this week, which has included releases for the Fossil Q Venture and Q Explorer, the Misfit Vapor, the Michael Kors Access Sofie & Grayson and the Emporio Armani Connected collection.
