The Amazfit Pop is the latest budget smartwatch from Huami – which is also known as the Amazfit Bip U in India. They're the same smartwatch, just named differently for different markets. Confused? We don't blame you.

And the Amazfit Pop Pro has also been unveiled, which adds GPS to the existing smartwatch at extra cost.

It it looks like a strong competitor to the emerging range of sub-$100 smartwatches, which are piling pressure on the likes of Fossil, Fitbit and Apple.

We’ve seen promising-looking devices such as the TicWatch GTX and the Xiaomi Mi Watch released in the past few weeks – but the Amazfit Pop looks to be more than a match.

Amazfit Pop specs

The Amazfit Pop/Bip U features a 1.42-inch display, up from 1.28-inch on the Bip S. The resolution has doubled, from 176x176 to 320x302, but it’s a TFT display, so we’re not expecting the same quality as the AMOLED army - such as the GTS 2/GTR 2.

There’s SpO2 tracking, stress monitoring and breathing training, and your vitals are tracked with the Amazfit BioTracker 2 module.

That will also help provide data from over 60 workout profiles. However, one downside is that there's only connected GPS, piggy-backed from your smartphone. We find this method is more likely to cause accuracy issues.

That has been addressed on the new Amazfit Pop Pro, however.

The overall look of the Bip U has been refined, at least from judging the press pictures. And the company has included 50 watch faces for customisation.

It’s not messing around in terms of features, either.

It’s also water-resistant to 50m and including swim tracking metrics.

And perhaps most impressively, you get 9 days of battery life – although there’s a high chance that will be decimated by things like using SpO2, as we’ve seen on previous Amazfit devices.

Budget tracker: Amazfit Band 5 review

In terms of price, the Amazfit Pop is ¥349 ($52) in China. The Bip U retails at Rs 5999 in India which is £62.99, which seems closer to a global price, IF Amazfit decided to offer it internationally.

Our totally unfounded prediction is that we're more likely to see the Amazfit Pop Pro globally, which costs ¥399, ($60). This would likely see it ending up around the same price as the existing Amazfit Bip S ($79) once taxes and importing has been added.

We’re fans of what the Bip S - announced in January 2020 - had to offer, but there’s no doubt it has the look and feel of a budget smartwatch. The improved screen, design and build of the Amazfit Pop make it a worthy successor.
