How to change a Garmin watch band

You can’t get better than a QuickFit fitter

Changing the band on your Garmin watch is simple, and it's likely you'll want to upgrade from the one out of the box fairly quickly. The standard bands that arrives with many sports watches are a bit like the headphones you get with smartphones – they serve a purpose and do the job, but you can do better. Garmin watches are no different.

Thankfully, the bands are easy to replace, meaning you won't need to take a trip to that shop that also reheels shoes and cuts keys. There are a number of different methods, depending on the Garmin watch you’ve purchased. There are industry-standard quick-release bands, screw-in bars and, for ultimate convenience, the Garmin QuickFit bands. We'll be running through the solutions for changing all of them here.

The QuickFit bands are ideal if you’re also wearing your expensive running watch as your go-to office timepiece. They come in metal, silicone, leather and titanium editions and are perfect if you want to glam-up your Garmin watch to wear in non-sweaty situations, but they are more expensive and aren’t compatible with all Garmin watches. Scroll down below to find out which bands your Garmin watch is compatible with and how to change them across.

Removing a Garmin watch band

How to change the band on your Garmin watch band

There are a number of methods for removing the watch band on a Garmin watch. Some require just releasing the spring, and others require unscrewing. The branded QuickFit bands can be unclipped instantly.

Screw-in watch bands

These come with two screws at either end of the lug holding the strap in place. Removing these requires a screwdriver (often provided with the new bands) and allowing the bar to drop out. Make sure you keep the pins and screws. There’s a diagram here.

Quick release bands

These bands, which ship with a number of Forerunner, Vivoactive, Vivomove and Approach golf watches, are easier to unclip. Simply pull back horizontally on the spring (usually through a lever poking out of the rear of the strap) and lift it out. Make sure you keep the pin.

QuickFit bands

The simplest of all. These bands come fitted with watches like the Fenix 5. All you need to do is pull down on the plastic quick release lever and the band will pop right out.

Replacing a Garmin watch band

Screw-in watch bands

Your new band should come with pins of its own. Use those and keep the old ones attached to the other bands. Simply insert the new strap into the lug and use the provided tools to screw in the screws at either end.

Quick-release bands

No screwdrivers required here. Pull back on the lever and hold it while you drop the strap into the lug. Release the spring and the band will lock in automatically. You’ll hear a satisfying click when it is in place.

QuickFit bands

Depending on which band you were originally using, you may need to drop the pin back in, minus the original strap. With the screw-in bands, simply replace the pin and affix by screwing it back into the lugs. For the quick-release band, follow the instructions above. If you’re already using a QuickFit band, there’s no need to mess with the pin.
