How to watch VR porn: Need to know

Watching porn on your laptop is going the same way as hiding dirty magazines and VHS tapes under your mattress. In its place, wearable technology and, more specifically, virtual reality headsets are transforming adult-only content into something far more real and immersive.

Barely had the first consumer VR headsets dropped before porn pushers were getting naked in front of 3D camera rigs and uploading their antics to the internet. Now, as VR finds its way into more and more homes, so too is VR porn - you filthy animals.

It's still in its infancy though, can vary in quality, and isn't always the easiest to access. Know where to look and which devices to use, however, and there's plenty of high-end footage out there for all tastes and tickles that's far more immersive and life-like than traditional 2D smut.

So, how can you watch VR porn? Well, here's everything you need to know.

What is VR porn?

VR porn, and there's no prizes for guessing this, is pornography that you can enjoy on virtual reality headsets. VR porn isn't just about watching, it's about experiencing. And not just in a 3D world.

Playing to the technology's strengths to add even more realism, the majority of VR porn is shot from a point of view perspective. This puts you in the eyes of the lead actor or actress, letting you live the action as if you were involved yourself. With some content even building in reactive head-tracking, you can actually look around the scenes, getting new angles on the action that make it feel like you're really there. The only difference is you can't reach out and touch.

This immersive, life-like experience is further enhanced by the lack of background distractions. Don your VR headset, press play and you feel like you're in the scene with whoever else is joining you. Just make sure you lock your bedroom door first though, yeah?

Lack of clothing aside, there something that separates this from your traditional VR experience. Unlike the majority of VR experiences, most VR porn doesn't make use of a 360-degree field of view. Instead, the majority of VR skin flicks are filmed with a 180-degree or 220-degree field of view.

That's because most people don't really want to stare at an empty room or blank wall behind them when there's something particularly rude going down front and centre. It also has the benefit of keeping file sizes down and streaming as smooth as possible to keep you enjoyment levels cranked to 11. Want the full 360-degree experience? Don't worry, there is still some content built just for you.

Which VR headsets are porn ready?

Despite porn having long been a supporting factor for the adoption of new technology standards - it helped VHS win out over Betamax and Blu-ray see off the charge of HD DVD - none of the major VR headset makers are overly keen on their devices being associated with an undue amount of flesh and rude stuff.

That doesn't mean there aren't work arounds though, oh no.

If you can handle a bit of high-tech hassle - when your hands aren't already busy that is - VR porn can be accessed on most VR headsets. The integration of features and image quality between devices, however, can vary.

VR headsets that use a docked smartphone as the screen, such as the Google Daydream View, Samsung Gear VR and Google Cardboard, are the easiest to cram the smutty stuff mere millimetres from your eyes. By downloading a compatible form of your desired content directly onto your handset, you can then simply access it through the VR headset's stock video player.

For basic VR porn, the stuff without head tracking and all that much depth, you can simply launch your phone's browser, point it in the direction of a smutty website, click a VR porn video and then slide it into your stereoscopic headset for some immersive fun. It works with most phones too, even iPhones that can be slotted within a Gear VR.

Want something more impressive? You got it, you can also backend VR porn on to your more advanced VR headset. Only certain VR porn websites support these more high-tech headsets, however, and there'll be a bit of trial and error to find the content that works well with your headset.

Two of the industry's biggest players, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, can be filled with VR naughtiness with relative ease.

To watch on Vive, you'll need to download a Virtual Desktop, paste the desired video's VRL in your VR browser and press play. On Vive, you'll need to download videos to your PC's hard drive before playing in a VR video player such as Whirligig.

If you want to watch VR porn on the PlayStation VR, you'll have to try a little harder. Here, you'll need to download your desired 360 videos in a traditional 2D format and save them in a dedicated folder on a USB drive.

Once you've inserted this drive into your PS4, you'll need to open the Media Player app and choose the VR Mode under the 'Options' tab. Having selected the file you want to play, simply put on the headset, sit back and relax.

Where can you find VR porn? Is it pricey?

How to watch VR porn - Here's everything you were too afraid to ask

The porn industry is renowned for being an early adopter of new technology. As such, there's already an abundance of VR porn doing the rounds. Dedicated companies and websites have already popped up, and a number of existing services, including the world's biggest porn website, Pornhub, now have dedicated channels devoted to VR porn.

Like your standard, 3D grumble, there's a variety of both paid-for and free VR porn. Given the higher production costs, however, the paid-for stuff currently outnumbers the free, especially if you're after something more than a couple of minutes long. Although there's plenty of free VR porn out there, most of it is short highlight packages of longer, paid-for films.

Of the free VR porn out there, most is available on tube sites - those that target you with ads rather than charge subscription fees. Joining PornHub here are services including Xhamster and Brazzers. Pornhub currently offers more than 1,000 VR porn videos, many of which are available without charge.

If you're after something a little more specialist and dedicated, paid-for services including Naughty America VR, VR Babes and VR Bangers (yes, really), all offer bespoke content for a monthly charge. These sites tend to offer exclusive access to certain porn stars and offer higher production value. Hitting all the buzzword checkboxes, sites such as VR Bangers offer VR porn that's been shot in 4K, 3D and which feature binaural sound.

Who can watch it?

Assuming you're of age, anyone can watch VR porn. One of the key benefits - as with traditional porn - is that people can experiment with their sexuality and play out hidden fantasies without affecting their real lives and relationships.

As it's so immersive and shot from a POV perspective, you can feel like you're trying that thing you've always wanted to try, with the sort of person you've always wanted to try it with. In the future, this could have worrying consequences, but at the moment things are being kept relatively aboveboard.

As you might expect, the majority of VR porn is geared towards straight white men, but there is a variety of content popping up and now is the time to shape who this new wave of experiences is created for. Whatever your sexual orientation, gender, race or untold fantasy, there's a VR porn video or two out there for you. In other words, get downloading if you want more of it.

As to whether it counts as cheating or not - your guess is as good as ours.

Gear VR only works with late-model Samsung phones. If you have an iPhone, you'll want a Cardboard-compatible headset. Bobo VR Z4 is nice and has head straps, built in audio headphones, and controller button. If you're just watching VR videos and don't need a controller, the FiiT VR 2S and the Leji VR Mini are also cheap, light, comfortable and easy to use. (External controllers don't work with iPhones, so given the choice, pick a headset with a built-in button like the Bobo VR.)
