The Polar M200 has gone live, essentially merging all the best features of the M400 and the A360 into one affordable little package.

Squarely aimed at beginner runners who want to get more from their training sessions, the Polar M200 brings the Finnish company's optical heart rate tracking tech to the wrist at a budget(ish) price point. It will cost $149 when it goes on sale later this year.

Wareable verdict: Polar M200 in-depth review

Polar first added wrist-based bpm tracking with the A360 and it was a bit of a let down but, with the just-launched Android Wear powered M600, we found the heart rate monitoring much more on the money.

With GPS built in and access to Polar Flow and the dedicated running programs it offers and that sub $150 price-tag, the M200 could well be an ideal first running watch. The Garmin Forerunner 35 is probably its closet rival, but that's around $50 more.

What's more, the Polar M200 throws in everyday activity tracking features such as steps, burned calories, sleep time and sleep quality, and it boasts smartwatch-esque features such as call alerts, incoming texts and third-party social media updates.

We gave the Polar M400 4 stars when we reviewed it back in 2014 and we were recently impressed by the heart rate tracking on the M600 so we're pretty excited by the M200's credentials.

The waterproof Polar M200's general battery life isn't mentioned so far but we do know that you'll get six hours of GPS tracking before it's burned out. We also know Polar will be flogging interchangeable wristbands for $19.90 a pop.

The M200 is launching later this year and, as mentioned costs $149. It comes in red and black as standard, with the other colour options to follow.
