VTech's Kidizoom DX2 smartwatch has two cameras and AR games

Plus instructions to Silly Yourself - sure, why not
Kidizoom DX2 watch has AR games

VTech's new Kidizoom DX2 smartwatch is aimed at ages four and up so we're going to go ahead and include ourselves in that bracket. Because the $59.99 kids watch looks pretty neat.

There's no GPS on board for child tracking. Instead, the DX2 comes in black, royal blue, purple and camouflage, has 55 watch faces to choose from and a bunch of mini games to play right there on the touchscreen. Plus there's a motion sensor for 'active play' games which get your child moving to complete challenges.

The main appeal, though, is the two cameras for selfies and shooting short video with a dedicated camera button on the side. There's also a filters app called Silly Yourself which is only fair as adults have been doing this for years now with Snapchat. The customised selfies can be set as watch faces.

And VTech has had the novel idea for a game called Monster Catcher which uses the cameras and AR to let kids roam around the park capturing weirdo-looking critters. We'll allow it.

No more concrete word on specs yet - battery life etc though we know it charges via MicroUSB. The DX2 is on sale now in the US alongside VTech's new $49.99 Kidizoom Action Cam 180 which features a rotating, 180-degree camera, slow-mo shooting modes, a water resistant case and bike and skateboard mounts.

Oh, we just noticed the official site says ages four to twelve. Ah well.
