How to connect Spotify and sync music to your Garmin watch

Updated: Garmin and Spotify's collaboration is music to our ears

Garmin has teamed up with Spotify to offer the offline syncing of playlists to its sports watches – offering more people than ever the chance to untether from their smartphone and work out uninhibited.

Spotify works on the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus, the Forerunner 645 Music and the Vivoactive 3 Music – and the lesser known D2 Delta.

Read on for how to get started listening to Spotify from your Garmin sports watch – and don't forget to check out how to add GPX maps to your Garmin watch while you're here.

What you'll need:

  • Compatible smartwatch
  • 50% charge or more
  • Spotify Premium (and the app installed on your phone).
  • PC/Mac with Garmin Express
  • A Wi-Fi connection for the music syncing

1. Get everything updated

Before you get started you will need to make sure everything is up to date. In fact, this part took longer than anything else. Hook your smartwatch up to our PC/Mac to Garmin Express (this might also needed updating). Then when that was done, it the update had to be installed on the watch. Once this is all done, you’re good to move on.

2. Download Spotify

Spotify is an app within the Garmin Connect IQ ecosystem, which you can find via the smartphone app. Head to the app and choose the More tab and then Connect IQ Store. In there, search for Spotify. Press download, and then guess what? Sync that Garmin watch again.

3. Find the Garmin Spotify app

You should get a notification on the Garmin watch saying a new provider had been added after the sync has taken place. We didn’t. Anyway, press and hold Down on the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus (the button positioned at 7 o’clock) and you’ll see it present in the list.

4. Add your login credentials

On the watch, scroll through the Spotify app and it will tell you to sign in using your Garmin Connect smartphone app. And handily, a notification will appear on your smartphone for you to jump straight to the sign in page. Login with your credentials, and the apps will be connected. Now head back to the Spotify app on the watch and see all your playlists. You can now choose one.

5. Connect to Wi-Fi

If you watch isn’t connected to Wi-Fi already, which ours wasn’t and yours probably isn’t, you will now need to connect it. The process isn’t actually that painful. Choose your network and use the on-screen keyboard to type in the password. You can now successfully choose a playlist to sync.

6. Run to the beat

And now you’re done. The last bit you’ll need is to connect a pair of Bluetooth headphones. That’s simple too. Just choose your ideal beats from the Spotify app on the watch and you’ll be prompted to add headphones. Put your Bluetooth buds in pairing mode and let the watch find them – when they pair it’s time to run.
