Fitbit has added a trio of niche, but intriguing, companies to its 'works with' program at CES. Starting today - 4 January - in the US, you can feed info from Habit personalised nutrition plans, Peloton indoor bikes and VirZoom VR gaming workouts into your Fitbit app.
Its open API means that Fitbit trackers already work with apps and devices such as Alexa on the Amazon Echo, Weight Watchers, Strava, NBA 2K17 and connected water bottles.
So what do the new recruits offer Fitbit users - or vice versa? Habit is a startup offering tool kits for $299 that take bio-data samples which are then analysed to create a personalised nutrition plan. So a bit more sophisticated than counting calories, then.
Now, if you're wearing a Fitbit, Habit's algorithms will take into account things like calories burned, weight and your body fat percentage (presumably from a smart scale) to recalibrate tailored plans for instance if you're trying to lose weight. Since half the world wants to lose weight, this is a step in the right direction - albeit premium - towards the holy grail of a real connected, coached weight loss system.
The remaining two partners are fitness focused. So with Peloton, you can now automatically sync ride data (name, time, distance, calories burned, HR) from its indoor bikes to the Fitbit app via on-bike instructions.
And if you have - or use - a $399 VirZoom VR bike controller, and you're in the US or Canada, it's much the same deal. You can log vSports and bike play sessions as exercises within the Fitbit app and once set up, Fitbit will log time, distance, calories burned and heart rate (if you have a Charge 2) in the app.

Fitbit's only real competition in terms of integrating its trackers with everything else going (and sales) is the Apple Watch Series 2. So it's nice to see the variety of startups and big names that it's working with. Stay tuned to see if Fitbit has any hardware coming at CES, though we wouldn't be surprised if it skips a big announcement this time around.
