During the earnings call where Apple revealed it has sold a bagillion iPhones, CEO Tim Cook also confirmed exactly when the Apple Watch will start shipping...and it's April. This is the first official confirmation regarding the Apple Watch launch date.

There had been widespread reports that the much anticipated smartwatch would launch in March, but the Apple boss said: "Development for Apple Watch is right on schedule, and we expect to begin shipping in April."

Smartwatch FAQ: Apple Watch: Specs, price and features

When the Apple Watch was officially unveiled way back in September 2014, Tim Cook took to the Flint Center for the Performing Arts stage to show off the new wearable for the first time and stated it would go on sale "early next year".

You will need an iPhone to run an Apple Watch; the Cupertino wearable will work with the iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6 and 6 Plus.

The Apple Watch's flexible Retina display is made from a single crystal of sapphire and the company has decided to use two physical buttons, as well as the touchscreen, for the smartwatch's controls; the most important of which is the Digital Crown that looks like a traditional watch dial but acts as a zoomer, navigator and home button.

Rivals: The best smartwatch you can buy

The Apple Watch is, of course, still unproven at this point but it definitely one of the most significant wearable devices to date.
