RunKeeper now supports GPS on Android Wear

Great news for Sony SmartWatch 3 users - the RunKeeper app has been updated to include GPS support for Android Wear devices.

In our Sony SmartWatch 3 review we lamented the fact that since Google introduced GPS support for Android Wear in the platform's update in October, the key players in the run tracking app game were slow to get their apps updated to support the new functionality. The only option for smartphone-free GPS tracking with the SmartWatch 3 was Google's MyTracks app.

However, the latest RunKeeper Android app does include support for the Sony SmartWatch 3 (at present the only Android Wear watch with GPS connectivity) as well as support for the SMS Audio BioSport Earbuds, with the built-in optical sensor on 50 Cent and Intel's earphones syncing heart rate data with the app.

The update means that you can fire up the RunKeeper app directly on your SmartWatch 3 and have it accurately track your run without needing the companion Android smartphone app running at the same time - you can simply sync the two once you get home.

It's free and available from Google Play now.
