VR porn revealed: Why the future of smut is behind the headset (NSFW)

And the experts say you'll get it for free
Why VR is the future of porn

Porn. It's long been passé to dismiss it for sweaty teenagers or hairy-palmed loners. Now the preserve of professional men and women alike; Kanye's rapped about it and comedians punchline gags with it. Smut's gone mainstream, and it's going virtual.

Porn's latest metamorphosis comes courtesy of the virtual reality revolution, and our wildest fantasies are about to collide so irreversibly we'll barely be able to pull the two apart.

There's an element of resignation to watching pornography on your bashed up laptop. A quick release then done. Not something that should be considered for too long or talked about.

But virtual reality turns the sordid into a luxury experience. Rather than having a sexual dose channeled through your screen, instead – through a headset – you take in high-quality, floor-to-ceiling titilation. It takes the already popular POV style porn – where the action is filmed over the shoulder of one protagonist, and places you into their body.

Going inside VR porn

The headset is completely anonymous – there is no way of an observer knowing whether you are watching global news, test cricket or adult material. Will we we all be watching grot on crowded tube carriages eighteen months from now?

It is with trepidation then that we sit down in a south London pub of all places to view a collection of videos. It is, we're told, trouser-stirring – regardless of your gender or exposure to adult material.

It's weird and naughty. The chuntering of evening punters as they chip into packets of crisps and pints whilst we watch bedroom debauchery. It's only a tiny glimpse – but we're fascinated to see what the fuss is about.

The material from VRP – Virtual Real Porn – has such obvious titles as Glamour Wife and After Party. Through the headset you just see a blue dot sensor which you direct via a pad on your temple – simply select the video from your virtual library, and it begins.

Immediately you're in the room. Not just watching a room on a screen, but a whole room that envelopes your senses. You can see carpet beneath your feet, an ornate bed head. Look above and a crystal chandelier hangs above you. Wall-to-wall vision with exquisite detail.

Then a girl walks in. Gravity-defying curves, high heels, bouncing as she moves. Every hair is defined, her skin tone is real, completely touchable. Her form fills your whole field of vision as you lie on the bed. She moved towards us and we pressed back into the supple leather of the Victorian pub's seat.

It's needless to describe in detail what happens in the video, but the HD flesh-meshing roleplay is too much to take it in. You're no longer a voyeur, you're a protagonist, and the penis that's featured in the film becomes your own – projecting out from your own body as you look down onto yourself. The sound is tone perfect, her breathy whispers are in your ear, tickling your neck, you can hear the smack of lip gloss as she kisses her lips.

We're agog. This is the future. It's so defined, so real. It's compelling, almost so vivid you're too stunned to be aroused, too punch-drunk to be excited. After pulling the visor off, we're immediately back in the hubbub of the pub, which is especially disconcerting. Our pulse is going like a kick drum.

The future of smut

With porn now free to air, the adult film industry is facing the same impossible dilemma music and film has faced. But could VR mean users are happy to pay for a luxury product again?

Leonor LaPlaza, relations manager of Virtual Real Porn says that while there may be a short spike in people buying VR entertainment, an virtual reality arms race will quickly drive the cost of porn back towards zero.

"It's very difficult to say, there are already many websites offering free porn and there will be free virtual reality porn sites in the future, therefore, I don't think so," she explained.

Virtual Real Porn started on January of 2014 for the handful of Oculus Rift DK1 owners, but now supports all the mainstream VR headsets and systems. Oculus DK2 and Samsung Gear VR are both specifically catered for, as well as Google Cardboard style systems that just use a smartphone and a pair of lenses.

However, it still feels far from a consumer ready experience. Far from the click and release of traditional porn, we needed a set of instructions to get the grot loaded onto our VR headset.

To load the movies one needs to download them from Virtual Real Porn, then take the files and extract the files before loading them into the correct folder on your smartphone. The step-by-steps on the site are clear enough, but the process is laborious and fiddly.

Porn the king maker

Sex has long been a driver of technology and consumer adoption. Urban legend has it that porn decided the outcome of the Betamax v VHS war in the 1980s.

It's too simplistic to say that adult producers adopting VHS over Betamax decided which product won out, despite popular rumour, but whether you look to the early printing press or the rapid adoption of Snapchat, sex sells tech.

But could it be the same for VR?

Laplaza and the rest of Virtual Real Porn are banking on it, and the word getting out that the VR experience is worth investing in.

"Huge numbers will buy a VR device for watching porn - as many bought a VHS player for the same reason," she explains.

"Why wouldn't they? Watching an adult film in VR makes you to feel like you are inside the film. You can move your head to look whatever you want, and with our stereoscopic 3D technology, you can feel how the actors come close to your face, whispering in your ears like they were really there."

By making its videos available for so many devices, VRP's uptake will be huge, but the costs are still astronomical for now.

"We direct our shooting sessions and its very tricky because there are so many things to have in mind on every take, plus you are using expensive, even handmade technology. This is followed by long and tedious post-production workflows," Laplaza said.

It looks real, but how can it feel real?

Make no mistake, VRP is spellbinding, but this is only dipping the toe into the waters says Robert Weiss, senior vice president of Clinical Development at Elements Behavioural Health and author of Always Turned On: Sex Addiction in the Digital Age. In the near future, your own existing web searches could come into play.

"One technology that's available right now in labs, with definite sexual applications, is headband/brainwave reader technology," Weiss explained.

"This tech could be used to figure out what types of porn turn you on the most, automatically opening new webpages for you that suit your taste."

You could have spent the afternoon watching a Jennifer Lawrence rom-com and your porn searches will offer you a J-Law-a-like when you go to bed. Back from a Spanish beach resort? Here are loads of Latin hunks in trunks with sexy senoritas.

Oh, and just in case you think all this sex watching is a solo pursuit, Weiss says there will be endless multi-player versions. "It will become the norm to stimulate another person through use of a teledildonic device, simply by you thinking about what you want to do to them, etc. The sexnological possibilities are endless, really, though we're still in the very early stages."

Whilst you add 'teledildonic' to your vocabulary consider that this tech is already here. Miami-based firm FriXion have launched a compatible device which controls any number of sex toys through one controller. Its creator, Seth told the Daily Mail. "While you're thrusting, I'm being penetrated. You're pushing back. I'm feeling the resistance. Honestly, no joke, this changes the world. It feels like the act of sex."

Feels like, looks like – when it gets so close is there even a difference with reality? This opens the idea that you can actually have sex not only with your partner while your away, but even your favourite porn star. Or multiple stars, rather like a mass game of Call Of Duty, all using their branded Fleshlights, or modelled dildos.

The sheen between reality and fake will become ever wafer-thin as the wave of wearable tech drives the virtual sex boom onwards. Much like phones have made face-to-face communication closer, our sexual desires will be played out in a virtual bedroom.

"The most important thing to note here is that every step sexnology takes brings the virtual closer to reality," explained Weiss.

"Do you remember the 1980s, when people got off on old-fashioned phone sex? In the 1990s we got BBS systems, email, AOL, and text chat rooms. In the 2000s we got webcams and texting/sexting, etc. Future robotic tech advances to the point where people are sexual with and even fall in love with robots is not so far off, so at some point we may not even need real people."

With virtual reality sex on tap, will we ever be able to turn it off? We're already terrified to find out.
