Microsoft Band gets major update

The first major update for the Microsoft Band has arrived, with 12 new guided workouts being added to the company's fitness wearable, including some from best-selling fitness author Mark Rippetoe - of Starting Strength fame.

The new features follow up the first mobile app tweaks for the Microsoft Health platform, which arrived on Windows Phone, Android and iOS last week.

The rivals: Best fitness trackers

"Our data shows that some of the most popular Guided Workouts on the Microsoft Band are for beginners, which told us that we needed to add a broad range of workouts at a variety of intensities," explained Matt Barlow, general manager of New Devices Marketing at Microsoft. "The Microsoft Band is the only fitness band that provides this level of personalised fitness coaching right to your wrist."

Bold claims and we're not sure that a few extra workouts and a slight app tweak will be the saviour of the much derided Microsoft Band, but at least it shows that the tech giant hasn't given up on the fitness tracker entirely.

In our Microsoft Band review, we criticised the device's chunky design and suggested the $199 Band could be an attempt to get its Health software onto as many smartphones as possible, rather than being an all-out hardware assault. In the long term, that could be much more valuable to Microsoft.

Microsoft's online store is listing the band as 'sold out' and is giving potential buyers the option to sign up for email updates. Since the October launch, there has only ever been extremely limited availability - another indicator that the Band isn't a key consumer product for Microsoft.

I returned mine on the 29th day. Could no longer bare the discomfort. Would also have been encouraging if MS had bothered to offer a single offer during those 30 days. I bought one the morning they went on sale. Felt like a prototype. Just received my FitBit HR today.
